Clean and Green

by Allison on October 8, 2009

I love giveaways. Entering them, winning them, hosting them, and giving the prize away. Lucky for me, I’m doing 2 of the 4 today!

The winner of the Buy Soap Nut giveaway is comment #27, Melissa, which was her comment that she was subscribed to Eat Clean Live Green. Awesome! Melissa also said:

I just used the last of my laundry detergent last night. I would love to try the soap nuts in my laundry. I have 4 kids and we do lots of laundry! I would also love to try the scrubber on my dishes. I’m a huge fan of anything coconut, so I’m sure it works great.

Congratulations Melissa!

Extra chances to win giveaways are a great reason to subscribe to Eat Clean Live Green! :)

Speaking of winning a  giveaway, how about another one? I promised you two giveaways this week, one green and clean (Soap Nuts) and another clean and green. :)

I was really excited when Vega sent me some products for review:

I absolutely love what Vega stands for: one should not have to compromise between whole food goodness and fast food convenience.

  • Plant-based whole foods are the true future of optimal health
  • Raw, alkalinizing foods are the best defense against illness and disease
  • Nutrient density is more important than calories
  • Food should provide energy, not drain it
  • Food should energize through nourishment, not stimulation
  • Avoid common allergens to reduce food sensitivities
  • It is possible to grow a younger body

In addition, this green girl loves that Vega is sustainable: A serving of Vega Health Optimizer leaves a tiny Carbon Footprint and provides many times the nutrition with 10 X less emissions than the typical light breakfast of cereal flakes, milk, yoghurt, banana and over 38 X less than a traditional bacon and egg breakfast with toast and hash browns.

The company, Sequel Naturals, also strives for sustainability: We seek to provide ecologically and socially friendly, premium natural health solutions with minimal impact on the ecosystem and without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. We will strive to achieve this through selective and efficient use of resources and energy in entirety be it via supply, production or consumption.

What about the taste and appearance?

I should warn you, the smoothie powders are green! Unfortunately, when I made smoothies to try out the powder, I didn’t add any spinach. I used things like blueberries + bananas + milk. The mixture of green + purple led to a grey smoothie. Which, while it tasted great, was hard to drink. My recommendation when using Vega smoothie mixes: add spinach! Expect your smoothie to be green!

There were definitely two stand out products that Vega sent me. The first is the Vega Whole Food Vibrancy Bar: Chocolate Decadence flavour.

    DSC_0949

It was awesome. It looked like a Clif bar, but it was sweeter. I will definitely buy this bar!

The other standout product was the Vega Antioxidant EFA Oil Blend.

     DSC_0918

It is a blend of many different oils, each with their own impressive qualities:

    • Green tea seed oil
    • Pomegranate seed oil
    • Black cumin seed oil
    • Black raspberry seed oil
    • Blueberry seed oil
    • Cranberry seed oil
    • Hemp seed oil
    • Flax seed oil
    • Pumpkin seed oil
    • Coconut oil

It actually had a greenish tinge to it, which made me laugh. Vega = green!

I used the EFA Oil Blend to make a vinaigrette, adding balsamic vinegar and a bit of pesto.

Earlier in the week, I packed up a bunch of salads to take with me to school. I find that one salad is a lot of work to make, but making 4 at once takes little to no extra work.

    DSC_0921

It was so easy to pull a ready made salad out of the fridge to be part of my lunch this week!

    DSC_0929

And the EFA Oil Blend viniagrette went perfectly with a salad of spinach + blueberries + dried cranberries + sunflower seeds + carrots.

I will definitely be buying the EFA Oil Blend once my sample runs out – it had an amazing flavour! It was actually kind of sweet, which paired perfectly with the tart balsamic vinegar. I guess that’s the pomegranete, blueberry and raspberry seed oils!

Last but not least, this live green girl loved the reusable bag. It’s huge! Which makes it perfect to take to the Farmer’s Market! :)

Want to try Vega yourself? One Eat Clean Live Green reader is going to win a variety of Vega samples including:

    • EFA Oil Blend
    • Whole Food Vibrancy Bar

    Yay Vega!
I use the Smoothie Infusion all the time, and it is fantastic…but I’d really love to try the new Vega Sport! It seems like a great alternative to the sports drinks they have with all the additives. I tried coconut water but unfortunately don’t really LOVE it on its own.
    Oh and I’m a subscriber too :)

I have never had the chance to try any of these products before, so I would love to try them all! However, that bar looked delicious and very similar to a chocolate Lara. I’m sold…

I would love to try the bars. I’m slowly getting used to the idea of bars as a snack or meal supplement if necessary. I have always been hesitant because of how many calories are in something so small but I know it’s about the quality as well. Oh, and I love me some reusable bags!
