Grass Juice

by Allison on October 18, 2009

I keep surprising myself with how many things I’ll try lately.

Running is the first thing that comes to mind – I jumped in to a 10k training clinic. And so far, it’s awesome. I’ve only run two runs with the clinic, and already I feel like a better runner. Starting off the day with a 6k run feels pretty good too :)

I ran it in 46 minutes. This puts me on track to run the 8k I’m scheduled for next weekend in about an hour, and the 10k in 75 minutes. That sounds like a long time to be running!

However, the run was left far behind considering the other ‘new thing’ I tried today: wheatgrass.

Apparently, it’s pretty much a wonder food drink*:

  • loaded with vitamins
  • lots of amino acids
  • prevents tooth decay
  • improves digestion

*although you get all of these things by eating lots of fruits and vegetables too

This stuff is dark! Almost black.

It smells like grass. It tastes exactly what you think grass would taste like: grass. Grass juice. There is no disguising it.

It also has an aftertaste of grass.

It wasn’t awful. But I’m in no rush to try it again.

Have you tried any “super-foods”? What did you think?

I have never had straight wheatgrass before–I hear it is quite strong in taste! And an aftertaste of grass does NOT sound pleasant.

When I was little, my mom used to drink this stuff called Barley Green. It was a green powder that she mixed with OJ or water. Not sure if they still make it, but I think it’s basically powdered wheat grass. Maybe that would be more tolerable?

I had a hard time with the wheatgrass powder too – and then I found Amazing Grass in tablet form – love these things, get all the benefits of wheatgrass w/out feeling like you are chomping on dirt/grass!! :) I take a serving every morning with my breakfast, perfect.

I’ve had wheatgrass twice, and each time I couldn’t get the taste out of my mouth for almost the whole day!
Also, goji berries taste like dirt to me. Just couldn’t eat them!

I’ve definitely never had a wheat grass shot before. It is in my Amazing Grass Superfood that I drink every day, though.

I love my Amazing Grass Wheatgrass powder! I use it everyday in my morning smoothie and sometimes post-run. My guy doesn’t mind it, he just hates the gritty-ness, but not the flavor. I’ve never had a shot of wheatgrass before but have always wanted to try it!

I’ve never wheatgrass. I would try it just because I’m curious but I don’t know if I would become a fan… probably not :P

I had a shot of wheatgrass when I was sick once, everyone told me it would make me feel better. The taste made me SICK! That was a long time ago–I might feel different now! lol

Haha, yup, wheatgrass is pretty grassy! At Jamba Juice they usually give you a slice of orange to chase it with. That helps!

I like the slice of orange chaser! :)

I think I would like it in smoothies better – I certainly don’t mind spinach in smoothies ;-)

i think i will take my greens raw as well – something about green grass juice just doesn’t sound appealing :)

I am scurred to try straight wheatgrass.

Mostly because I am imagining it tasting like lawn clippings ;)

I am glad you are liking running – I think a clinic would be great for me,but I live in a small town/state so there’s nada around!

like everyone else says…try Amazing Grass wheat grass! It doesn’t taste grassy at all. And you can mix it with other things to disguise the taste if it really bothers you. :-)
