It Tastes Just Like

by Allison on October 21, 2009

I absolutely hate when people say that something tastes just like something else. It almost always refers to a healthier version. And it never tastes as good as the non-healthy version.

But I am always the optimist, so I’m usually willing to give it a go. What if this time the healthified version is as good as the unhealthy? What if I missed out on something amazing?

And usually, I’m left disappointed and/or disgusted.

Exhibit A: Sunflower Seed Butter. I read that it tastes just like peanut butter. Of course, natural peanut butter tastes just like peanut butter and is good for you, but I was intrigued.

So I bought some. And it might have been the most disappointing ‘just-like’ I have ever tried. It wasn’t even close to peanut butter, in taste or texture. Whoever said it was, was flat out lying.

I became disillusioned with the ‘just-like’s. But when Paige wrote about Almond Butter that tasted just like cookie dough (!) I couldn’t resist giving it a try.

I won’t leave you in suspense, this is amazing.

Add 1 C chopped almonds to a food processor. (You could probably add whole, but this is what I had)

Let the food processor chop/blend/grind the almonds into crumbs (about 1 minute).

Keep processing! It will seem like nothing’s happening, but then all of a sudden you will see almond butter appearing around the edges (about 3 minutes).

Keep processing, stopping every once in a while to scrape the edge of the bowl.

Process until you have almond butter to your desired consistency. It’s that easy! :)

At this point, you have pure almond butter. It’s a little bland. If you desire something a little more magical, add 1 tsp maple syrup and 1/4 tsp sea salt. I also added 1 tsp canola oil to make the mixture a little more liquidy (you could also just keep processing longer!)

Voila! Cookie Dough Almond Butter. Try it! :)

It really does taste just like cookie dough!

Of course, maybe you have odd taste buds, or you put strange things in your cookie dough, so no promises that it will taste just like cookie dough to you – but it will be amazing!

You know where this was going ;-) Cookie Dough Oatmeal! I made oats as normal, then added 1 tbsp each chocolate chips and cookie dough almond butter.

It was delicious!

Have you ever made something that tasted just like something else? Did it turn out good or bad? :)

Yay! I’m glad you liked it!!:D I ran out of it yesterday though- twas sad.

And I agree with you about the sunflower seed butter. Blech! It’s been sitting in my fridge for a month because I don’t know what to do with it!

Lady you’re a genius! I’ve GOT to try this! Amazing! Oh and I try to make banana “frozen yogurt” taste like hazelnut gelato by adding some dark chocolate and hazelnut butter…not quite the real deal but pretty darn close!

Yeah, Sunflower butter tastes NOTHING like pb. We used to buy it for my daughter when she was allergic to peanuts. We liked that it was similar texture-wise, but definitely had a taste all its own.

I have made my own almond butter before and I was suprised at how easy it was! I usually add a tbsp. of honey to it -delish!

That sounds so good!

I also hate when people say something “tastes just like….”. There are very few things that actually do!

Love this idea. I also can’t stand the whole “tastes just like” thing. I love Larabars, but they will never ever taste “just like” a pie or a cookie to me. Close maybe, but not quite.

I LOVE sunflower butter. It’s probably my fav or all that I’ve tried. I’ve made hummus with kidney beans..that was interesting. I loved the colour.

I totally know what you mean! I hate when people say something tastes exactlyyy like that decadent dessert you love, but it’s nowhere even close.

But I love sunflower seed butter!! Whoever said it tastes like peanut butter is very wrong, but it has a great unique flavor.

I have an unopened jar of sunflower butter in my fridge I haven’t tried yet, but when I do, I will make sure I expect it to taste nothing like peanut butter! I hate when products are “fake” but claim to taste just like the real thing.

For example, fake meat products (I don’t eat meat, so why would I want to eat something that tries to taste like it?)The same goes with medicine and mouthwash–does not taste like grape, cherry or bubble gum. Sorry. :)
