One of my favourite clean foods is oatmeal. It’s amazingly good for you: it’s a whole grain containing lots of insoluble and soluble fiber. Cooked oats are incredibly filling – keeping you feeling satisfied for a long time!
But oatmeal seems to be a food people love or hate. And honestly, I think some people who hate oatmeal are sadly misinformed – I wouldn’t be impressed by sugary mushy instant oats from a package either.
But there are so many things you can add to oatmeal to make the change from boring and bland to amazing, while still keeping it a clean and healthy breakfast!
First, start with rolled oats, not instant! Instant turns to mush once cooked
Combine 1 part oats with 2 parts liquid (I usually use 1/3 C oats, 1/3 C water, 1/3 C milk). I also add 1 tbsp flax meal.
Add a dash of salt, and bring to a boil. Don’t leave out the salt! Unless you’ve been told from a doctor to watch your sodium intake, a little salt will do wonders for your cooking – especially for grains. Don’t be scared of a little salt!
The secret to creamy and sweet oats? Banana! Add 1/2 a banana, chopped, to your bubbling oats. The browner the banana, the sweeter your oats will be.
Continue to boil for a few minutes, stirring often. Voila! Tasty, creamy, healthy oatmeal.
But you’re not done yet; you still have boring oats! Add some toppings to your oatmeal! Suggestions:
- Nut butters
- Nuts
- Fruit
- Granola
Who could hate a bowl of PB&J oats?
Or my tasty combination of this morning: Thanksgiving Oatmeal!
Along with the banana, I added 1/3 C unsweetened applesauce, and pinches of nutmeg + cinnamon + ginger. Topped with pumpkin butter.
It tasted like a mixture of pumpkin + apple pies. Delicious!
Are you an oatmeal lover or hater? If you love oatmeal, what’s your favourite oatmeal topping?

Lizzy – my favorite is blueberries + almonds!
Michelle – I’m going to look for rice flakes and try your savory oats! yum!
Meg – sometimes they are called quick oats. If they’re not instant, they’re probably rolled

I looooove oatmeal! I incorporate it into breakfast about 5 days a week. I love pumpkin stirred into my oatmeal with some brown sugar, cinnamon and topped with cranberry sauce. Yum!
Other favorite combo is to cook the oatmeal with a ripe banana and some cocoa powder and then top with nut butter.
Now I want breakfast!
