Over my Head?

Looking for the Nature’s Path giveway? Enter here by 10 pm MST Thursday!

Remember how I ran a 5k a few weeks ago? In the snow?

For some reason, I came home and signed up for a 10k training clinic. Apparently, in two months I am going to be running 10 kilometres.

It’s entirely possible I jumped in over my head. 10k sounds like a really long distance. I still think 5 is a long ways!

Last night was the first session of my 10k Training Clinic (through the Running Room).

The instructor started out by saying we were supposed to run 6k, but she’d take it easy on us – we’d only do 5. But no walking.

I’m not kidding, I think I had tears in my eyes. 5k, no-stopping? In the snow? (again!). What would happen if I did stop to walk? I’d get snowballs pelted at me?

(I would love to run 5k without stopping. But I’m not going to feel bad that I can’t, yet.)

Luckily, half the class protested, and wanted to do the 10/1 splits. (Isn’t that the Running Room’s claim to fame or something?).

Maybe it’s embarrassing for awesome, or old-school runners to stop and walk, but I love it. Running seems so much more manageable if I can run in increments.

And thankfully, I wasn’t the only one who wanted to!

5k, 36 minutes = best time yet. Maybe this running clinic is going to be good for me afterall ;-)

I’m not sure when my next run is supposed to be:

  • 10k training plan says 5k tomorrow. Start hills in a few weeks.
  • Clinic instructor said hills today.

This is what it looks like outside right now.

Isn’t my model cute? ;-)

This is the forecast for tomorrow:

11*C/52F and sunny – I think I’ll go tomorrow – the snow will have melted! Better take advantage of nice weather when I can! :)

Have you ever jumped in ‘over your head’? Please tell me it turned out wonderfully for you! ;-)

Cutest puppy ever! You’re brave to sign up for a 10k — it will be great!

You have THAT much snow? That is crazy!

You can do it!! I just ran my first 10K on Monday and remembered thinking OH $&%$& when I signed up! But I LOVED it! It was so much fun, and I totally abide by the run/walk increments and still call myself a “runner.” Hey, if you’re outside in the snow, training for races, you are as much a runner as those 13% body fat, 20 year old dudes that churn out 6 minute miles! Congrats on signing up!

yes yes yes…. I did EXACTLY the same thing. I’d been doing wimpy little interval runs on the treadmill when The Boy sent me a link to a 5K, 10K, half mara event in my city that was 6 weeks away. I said I’d sign up for the 5K, but The Boy heckled me until I signed up for the 10. It was scary but I didn’t want to make a fool of myself so I trained hard (but sensibly) and it worked out wonderfully. I had heaps of fun, which is the main thing, and ran a 10K in 52:32

Everytime I jump in over my head it turns out to be a wonderful experience. Even if it’s hard and sucks at the time I “grow” so much and learn so much about myself and my limitations.

“jump and the net will appear”

GOOD LUCK!

Is that part apricot poodle?? It looks almost like mine did as a puppy!

Ha, I can’t believe they wanted you to do 6k at your first meeting for a 10k! That’s just silly. I’ll be interested in hearing about your experience with the Running Room though. I’ve always wanted to join their group runs, but it’s typically during my working hours.

And I couldn’t agree with you more about intervals! They’ve been key for me in doing long distances. Don’t let anyone make you feel wimpy for a few seconds of walking! You’re probably doing your body more good anyways :)

I signed up for a triathlon this past summer. Nuff said :P

First of all – it’s still snowing?!? Oh man.

Second of all – no stopping? Oh man again. Yes. Walk/run splits is running room’s claim to fame. What’s going on?

Thirdly – I too have felt in over my head when I signed up for a half marathon and I could only run 10km. But I did it. ANd I bet you can too – just keep the walk breaks going!!

Ironically I wrote about running in crazy weather on my blog today too. I’m glad I haven’t had to deal with the white stuff yet. Don’t you slide around?

I’m so jealous of your snow. It’s just not fair! We had 85 degree heat today. Bleh.

When I started C25k, I really didn’t think I’d be able to do it at all. I’m pretty out of shape, but it was the best thing I could do for myself. Otherwise I may have pushed myself way too hard or not hard enough.

Hope your training clinic works well for you!

I decided on a Friday that I was going to run a HILLY 12km race. I had only ever really ran about 5km in the past four months leading up to it. I told myself that I wasn’t going to walk no matter what. Guess what? I finished it :)

If I can do it..you can to!

sounds like we have similar running patterns. i did 10 k for first time and it was hard but i did it! 36 min is really close to what i do for a 5k – we would be good running buddies me thinks! wish i had more people that lived in omaha – i only know one bloggie that does. sucks!

I felt the EXACT same way about my first (and only) 10K. I was undertrained but it went GREAT! You can run fasted than you think. My personal belief is, if you can run 5k, you can run 10..it’s just an issue of what time you will run it in. You’re going to do great!

you can do it! I never used to be able to run more than 1 minute at a time, and now I can run 5-6 miles at a time. You’ll do great! Just take it one day at a time.

cute puppy picture :)

Susan – nope! She’s a Bichon – Shi Tzu – Yorkie. We call her a cute mutt :)

Katherine – I feel like every step I run in the snow I have to really concentrate on stepping down, hard, so I don’t slip! It’s so much harder than running on dry ground! Maybe it’s something you adjust to?

Kaytee – I’m jealous of your 85*!

haha i love that funny cartoon about the marathon–i literally laughed out loud when i read it :)

i think its great what you’re doing, very inspiring! Sometimes you just gota jump into things without thinking, and you’ll be rewarded for it in the long run. Just imagine how amazing you’ll feel crossing that finish line at your 10K race when before you didnt think it would be possible! can’t wait to read more about your training

…and your pup is absolutely adorable!

Oh I totally know what you mean! I signed up for a 10k months ago and now it’s 3 weeks away I’m totally nervous about it! I think no matter what, I’ll be proud of my accomplishments, but I really want to do the whole thing no walking. Weather should be fine, but I guess it’s a hilly course and I haven’t trained on hills AT ALL. But I’ll manage somehow, and you will ROCK your 10k too!

Good luck with the training plan. That’s awesome that you already bested your 5k pr. Hopefully that means good things for the 10k too!

OMG, congrats on taking the plunge!!! I’m certain you’ll do wonderfully in the marathon… the best part about it is simply having the experience! You will learn so much about yourself and your running from preparing and being in the marathon.

Isn’t all this snow depressing!? I’m still wishing summer would come back to us! ;)

You rock!! Way to go for signing up for the 10k…I can’t wait to follow along on your progress. And don’t even worry about jumping in “over your head,” you’ll be fine, I know it! :D

23 Errign October 15, 2009 at 7:26 pm

Good luck! You’ll be fine – especially if you got a training crew to train with! That will make it seem way more do-able (not that I think you can’t do it, cause you can!)

I am tres jealous of your snow, just so ya know.
