Pay It Forward (giveaway!)

by Allison on December 26, 2009

Today is Boxing Day in Canada – I have no idea what the original meaning of the holiday is, but currently, it’s a shopping holiday! Stores usually have great sales, especially on big ticket electronics! I can’t resist a good sale, but hate the crowds, so Grant and I were at the mall before it even opened today :)

Which meant time to grab a coffee (I planned this well!). The lady in front of me in line used a gift card, and had about $0.20 left – she told the girl behind the counter she just didn’t want it – save it for the next customer’s purchase – me!

I was thrilled. It wasn’t like  $0.20 was going to make or break if I could get a coffee but it was such a nice gesture. I have been smiling all day! :)

Later on this morning, after using one of our gift cards – there was just a little bit of money left on the card. We could have held on to it – odds are, we’d shop there again, and might have remembered to use the remaining balance on the card. Instead, we paid it forward, and left the card for the next customer.

I hope it made their day too :)

What about the giveaway?! I thought paying it forward would be a great way to give away this great reusable stainless steel water bottle.  Hip Green Deals sent me an Earthlust bottle, and I love it. It’s cute, lightweight and the opening is large enough to fit ice cubes. EarthLust bottles are hand made from high quality food-grade stainless steel. They use non-toxic paints and BPA-free caps.

Carrying around a reusable bottle (especially a cute one like this!) is an easy way to stay healthy (drinking lots of water!) while living green .

At the entrance to a public building, someone let the door slam behind them when this mother loaded with newborn baby, carseat and baby bag was just about to enter. She had no hands left to open the door. I ran to hold the door open.

My landlord once passed an act of kindness to us….he took a big chunk of our rent off during a time in our lives when we were struggling. I’ll never forget it.

I love to pay an extra toll for the person behind me on the highway. I’ll never see their face when the toll booth person says “your toll has already been paid” but I like to think it makes someone happy! :)

I lovvvvvvve this!! I try to pay for the person in the drive through behind me (starbucks or time hortons) It makes me smile!!

We also this Christmas went through all our clothes/jackets, and took 3 garbage bags down to a local homeless shelter… they very rarely get nice newish clothing, as many people bring it to the thrift store…. :)

I love paying it forward…

I have shovelled the walkways of our neighbors. I like to keep ours as clean as I can so I’m always out early to get it done and since I’m already dressed I figure why not do the neighbors and save them the trouble.

A Christmas tradition when I was younger was to pay for someone at the toll behind us on our way to my grandmother’s house. Now that there is EZ Pass it’s harder to do that. I like paying for people at Starbucks. :-)

Recently, I’ve been collecting things at my apartment, like clothing and furniture, which I gave to refugee families. I also taught a session about obtaining health care in America to some refugees from Burma!!

Thanks for the giveaway!

Last time I had to pay a toll I paid for the guy behind me. It was only 50 cents and someone had done it for me once.

I looooove this! If you have ever listened to KLove or The Word FM, they are always encouraging people to do this! It’s a nice reminder :) Anywho, I was at the mall the other day and there were two people behind me in the line at Subway. One was a custodian & one was a police officer. I just felt like God was speaking to me, so I decided to pay for their meals too! I just mentioned it to the woman at the register and she rung up their subs on my bill. I didn’t say anything to the men, but before they left, they both came over to the table where I was sitting to thank me. The one actually kissed my forehead! He was such a cute old man. Sometimes its the smallest things that make a world of difference to someone. His smile was so worth the 5 bucks! :)

I believe it’s called Boxing Day because back when people had servants they had to work on Christmas Day. They were given the 26th off work and got the leftovers from the 25th “boxed up” for them. Just FYI :)

I clean my closet out every season and donate all that stuff to Airman’s Attic which is a thrift store for newly enlisted people and their families in the military. It really helps them out! We have donated a TV and a printer too in the past year!
