Trying Out Tofu

I tried something new for dinner tonight: Tofu.

I’m not going to lie, I was a little scared of the stuff. I’ve had it before, but only once, as part of a stir fry cooked in a restaurant. I’ve also used soft tofu as part of a creamy stroganoff sauce.

But I had never cooked tofu, to be eaten as tofu before.

However, part of my Ethical Eating goals are to eat less meat. And while I have never cooked tofu before, I don’t have anything against it, and extra-firm tofu seemed perfect for an easy, meatless meal.

Making my own curry sauce, and trying tofu for the first time seemed a bit much for one night, so I picked up a premade sauce at the grocery store. The Korma sauce was very mild, spice-wise. Once I added quite a few red pepper flakes, and a dash of agave nectar for a little sweetness contrast, the sauce was excellent.

I used half the block of tofu, diced into small pieces.

I stir fried some broccoli, snow peas and cabbage, along with the diced tofu, in a little coconut oil. Once the vegetables were soft, I topped it all with the Indian Korma sauce.

I served it all over brown rice – and I must say, I’m extremely impressed with how easy, quick and tasty this dinner was! Not to mention, how filling it was. I’ve definitely got lots of leftovers for dinner this week.

The tofu exceeded my expectations – it had no flavour whatsoever, absorbing the Korma sauce and it’s flavour. The texture was a little odd – a little squishy, but it grew on me :)

I’m looking forward to experimenting more with Tofu! So…

What should I make with the remaining 1/2 block of Tofu?

Or if you aren’t a Tofu fan…

Are there any foods you’ve been a little scared of, and were pleasantly surprised by?

Try using the leftover tofu in a tofu scramble. Just crumble and “brown” in a pan, add veggies and cheese. I eat them a lot – you can check out my blog for some suggestions.

Oh, and in answer to your question – yes! I just made Chickpea Curry the other night and it smelled horrendous! I thought it was going to be terrible, but it tasted fantastic! I was sorry I only made half the recipe!

Try cutting the tofu into small cubes, adding some salt, pepper and spices of your choice and spread on parchment paper on a cookie sheet. Bake in the oven for 30 mins at approx 400 degrees F, allow to cool and voila – a tasty snack for anytime, anywhere.

I love tofu! I either bake it with some spice rub and EVOO (375 for 20-30 mins, flip once), or I LOVE this recipe for Caramelized Tofu from Heidi Swanson. http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/caramelized-tofu-recipe.html

I either use brussels sprouts for myself, or broccoli for me and the boyf =)

You’re a lot braver than I am trying tofu!
When my mum went through a vegetarian stint while I was a kid, she would have us eat tofu all the time. Ironically, she had a food intolerance test and soy was the thing she was allergic to the most. Since I have similar food intolerances as my mum, I don’t want to take chances and have soy added to my list as it is in EVERYTHING. I guess it means more tofu for you. ;P

I use my leftover tofu bits for tofu tacos, slather with bbq and bake or use in a tofu scramble.

I was really skeeved out by using it at first (I think because of th texture before you cook it) but now love it.

I’ve never made my own tofu before either. Once I bought tempeh and then it just went bad in my fridge!

Coincidentally I just tried the “Butter Chicken” PC Blue Menu sauce this weekend – it was okay – nothing to write home about but not too bad.

I make this fantastic dry fried green beans and tofu recipe. I first tasted it in San Fransisco and fell in love! I have the recipe on my blog. Good, gingery and garlicky! Vegetarian too, while we are not vegetarian we eat it 2-3 times a week.

Thanks for coming by! I have enjoyed you blog. Good luck with running.
