Is it Summer Yet?

by Allison on March 10, 2010

I’m going through fresh fruit withdrawal.

Last summer, the Farmers Markets around Calgary had the best strawberries. And blueberries. And peaches.

And it occurred to me, that I should buy extras and freeze them for the winter. I think I froze two bags of blueberries.

They were gone within a week. I probably used them for smoothies. ;-)

This summer, I am going to buy extras. Lots of extras.

Because buying frozen fruit is neither cheap, or nearly as tasty as those Farmers Market local fruits.

Healthy Chocolate Smoothie

However, this Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie is pretty awesome. It’s super chocolately, which means that it doesn’t really matter how great the strawberries are – this is a smoothie for the frozen grocery store strawberries.

‘It’s not Quite Spring Yet’ Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie

Blend together:

  • 1 C frozen strawberries
  • 30 g dark chocolate hemp protein powder
  • 1 C milk
  • 1/2 banana

  Strawberries and Chocolate

It might get me through until the fresh strawberries! :)

What fruits are you looking forward to buying locally this summer?

We’re fairly new here, and I just discovered a farmers’ market through a back, out-of-the-way side street. Can’t wait to browse there. I love surprises like that.

Oh! We get a lot of extra fruit from the Farmers market too, and last year we picked strawberries and cherries which we flashfroze with dry ice, and I just finished the last bag of them yesterday…can’t wait for all the new fruit this summer, I’m with you! Berries, and Peaches, and Melons galore! Here’s to Sunshine and Summer Weather!

I agree – this summer I am buying and freezing as many berries as my freezer will hold!

I am looking forward to vegetables actually. Fresh green beans, tomatoes, basil, and cukes. I love having my garden.

I’m going to try my hand at growing ground cherries this year! So excited!

Other than that, I live for the two week cherry season each June :)

I need to try hemp, I read about it all the time. Don’t you just love drinking smoothies out of pretty glasses? This flavor combo sounds great!

I am totally craving summer and fresh fruit, too! Today I paid an arm and a leg for a few bites of strawberries and pineapple at Whole Foods (in a salad). After those few bites I was wishing I would have emptied my savings and just bought the whole bar. I can’t wait for it to all be in season again!

Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day.

I miss the fresh local produce so much this time of year. The frozen stuff has no taste compared to fresh. I’m looking forward to the strawberries, blueberries and rhubarb!
