Potatoes are a Real Food

by Allison on March 3, 2010

This week’s ethical eating item is potatoes! (previously: eggs)

Somewhere along the line, potatoes got a bad reputation. In the midst of the Atkins low-carb frenzy, potatoes were shunned and portrayed as the bad guy – “you might as well eat a loaf of white bread!”

We eat carbs again now – we all know that a healthy diet is one balanced in carbohydrates, fat and protein. But potatoes seem to be stuck with their bad reputation.

Sweet potatoes became a trendy replacement for the poor little white potatoes. Restaurants began serving sweet potato fries (newsflash: no matter what kind of potato it is, if it’s deep fried, it isn’t healthy!)

Don’t mistake me for a sweet potato hater – I love sweet potatoes! However, you don’t need to join the 100% sweet potato club and banish potatoes from your life – potatoes are good for you too. Potatoes are a vegetable! They shouldn’t be lumped together with processed food-like substances, like white bread or instant white rice – potatoes are a real food! And a pretty good-for-you one at that:

Image: Potatoes.com

  • 45% of the daily value for vitamin C
  • 620 mg potassium (comparable to bananas, spinach and broccoli!)
  • 110 calories, and 2g of fiber

The great news is that potatoes are a very easy item to buy ethically! The not so great news? Potatoes are a really important item to buy ethically.

The problem is all of those fast food French Fries – even if “healthy eaters” don’t usually eat a lot of potatoes, North America sure does. Potatoes are one of the most heavily treated vegetables!

The problem: Root vegetables absorb herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides that wind up in soil. In the case of potatoes—the nation’s most popular vegetable—they’re treated with fungicides during the growing season, then sprayed with herbicides to kill off the fibrous vines before harvesting. After they’re dug up, the potatoes are treated yet again to prevent them from sprouting. "Try this experiment: Buy a conventional potato in a store, and try to get it to sprout. It won’t," says Moyer, who is also farm director of the Rodale Institute (also owned by Rodale Inc., the publisher of Prevention). "I’ve talked with potato growers who say point-blank they would never eat the potatoes they sell. They have separate plots where they grow potatoes for themselves without all the chemicals."

What can you do instead? Buy organic potatoes. Washing vegetables won’t help if the chemicals have been absorbed into the flesh.

Since potatoes grow all over North America, local varieties are easy to find. In addition, since potatoes store well, local varieties should be available year round!

What’s your favourite way to eat potatoes (regular or sweet potatoes!)? Baked  or roasted or mashed or pan fried or ______ ?

I’m tempted to say all of the above, but my favourite-est is probably roasted.

I love ALL potatos. My favorite way to eat regular or sweet is roasted with salt and pepper, and topped with parmesan cheese. My favorite kind are yukon golds!

You are so right I often forget potatoes are a real food! I need to buy organic ones now that I hear how bad conventional ones are. Great informative post!

Thanks for this! I’m a huge potato lover (hello, I’m Irish!), but I read mixed messages about their nutritional benefits all the time. I’m actually reading a book now by Walter Willett, the chair of Nutrition at the Harvard School for Public Health, and he’s in the “eat white potatoes sparingly” camp.
I’ll read some more about the research he’s done on the topic and maybe write a reply to this post :)

I love sweet potatoes – oven roasted and drizzled with a little EVOO, sea salt & fresh ground pepper – delightful!

After eschewing regular potatoes for years (thinking all “white” carbs were bad) I have recently become fond of them again – most commonly, stuffed inside a vegetarian baked samosa:)

Have a great day Allison!

I grew up on meat and potatoes, and I LOVE them! I have never discriminated against them, and I think that people are freaks for doing so! I pretty much will eat them any way but raw!

I haven’t ever been a “regular” potato fan. It’s not that I don’t like them, I’d just rather eat something else. I’ve always LOVED sweet potatoes, though. My fam likes potaotes and after reading how much crap goes into them, I’ll be switching to organic from now on! Better yet….I think I’ll grow some in my garden this year…

First of all, thanks so much for stopping by my blog and I am so glad to have found yours! I actually just had a big chat with one of my co-workers about striving to “eat clean.” I have read through a bit of your blog and I am also someone who hearts Couch to 5K and I am a recent oatmeal convert (I finally tried steel-cut oats and realized I don’t hate oatmeal, after all).

I am Irish and I love any and all potatoes. They taste the very, very best when the season has just started and the potatoes are new and thin-skinned and just out of the ground. (My uncle is a potato farmer, so I am spoiled when I visit.) Boil them in their jackets and the skin just opens up like a flower. They don’t need anything on them because they are just that good. A little butter and salt, of course, puts them over the edge.

Oh and, um, I also love cheese fries.

100% agreed!! Even if potatoes are “starchy”, there is no reason to fear them!! I love how there’s so much potassium in a little potato :-) Excellent! I love them in all forms. Making your own roasted fries = DELICIOUS. And mashed of course. With sour cream and garlic salt!

I randomly mixed a baked sweet potato, avocado, feta, and salsa together with some roasted corn and about died because it tasted so good. I’ve been dying to make it again since that day.

I’m loving this series! I’ve been sharing them via my reader with friends. Although by sharing this one I got a “No! Not potatoes too! I hate being informed!” Can’t wait to see what’s next!
